La Grange lies on the Colorado River, and is centrally located for economic activity. The City's location led to an early reputation as a trade town for early farmers and ranchers. As the oil industry grew in the state of Texas, La Grange continued as a center of activity due to its location in the Austin-Chalk oil field. Many small towns had become dependant on the oil industry for economic survival, and the oil bust of the 1980's had disastrous effects on citizens and municipalities alike. Thanks to the Lower Colorado River Authority's Power Plant, La Grange had a more diversified economy than some of its counterparts throughout the state, and has continued to enjoy a healthy economy.

La Grange's role as a regional center continues today. The labor drawing area of the City consists of a 65 mile radius. The aforementioned area includes ten other counties, which is a testament of La Grange's regional employment influence.
